Former bantamweight world titlist Luis Nery has had his suspension lifted by the WBC and is scheduled to return to the ring on Oct. 6.
In June, the sanctioning organization suspended him from participating in any bouts the WBC was involved in for six months, retroactive to his failing to make the 118-pound weight limit for a title defense in March.
Nery was due to defend his world title in a rematch with former titlist Shinsuke Yamanaka on March 1 in Tokyo, but Nery badly missed weight. He was 121 pounds, three over the limit. He was stripped of the world title and later suspended. The bout went ahead anyway with Yamanaka eligible to win the vacant title but Nery (26-0, 20 KOs), 23, a southpaw from Mexico, knocked him out in the second round.
“Former WBC bantamweight champion Luis Nery has fully complied with the WBC requirements as per the ruling issued by the WBC Board of Governors regarding his weight management problem, which led to him losing his world championship early this year,” the WBC said in announcing the end of Nery’s suspension. “The WBC hereby confirms that Luis Nery suspension ended on Sept. 1 and he is now eligible to compete for a WBC championship.”
Nery is scheduled to fight for a minor WBC belt on Oct. 6 in his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico, against Jason Canoy (27-8-2, 19 KOs), 28, of the Philippines, who is coming off a 12-round decision loss in Japan in February and has lost two of his past three bouts.
