With a new manager and another big signing in the winter, Atlanta United are gearing up to defend their MLS Cup title in 2019.

The Chicago Fire have acquired striker C.J. Sapong from the Philadelphia Union, the club announced on Saturday.

Sapong, 30, changes clubs for what could be up to $450,000 in combined allocation money, with the Union set to receive $200,000 in 2019 General Allocation Money, $100,000 in 2020 Targeted Allocation Money, and possibly an additional amount in 2019 General Allocation Money.

“CJ has produced many memorable moments in a Union shirt, and his efforts in the community have been admirable,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a statement.

“With the strong state of our forward depth chart, we believe that this is the best move for both CJ and for the Union at this time.”

A United States international, Sapong has spent eight seasons in MLS, which also included a stop with Sporting Kansas City.

He’s scored 56 goals and provided 23 assists over 233 MLS appearances for his career.

“CJ brings a different skill set to our attacking options,” Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez said in a statement. “We can now be more varied in how we attack.”

Sapong has been capped by the United States four times, with his most recent appearance coming in January’s friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
