Porter cuts hair to make weight for Ugas fight

Shawn Porter nearly didn’t make weight for Saturday’s WBC welterweight title bout against Yordenis Ugas. What saved him? A pair of scissors.

Porter originally weighed in at 148.8 pounds — nearly two full pounds over the 147-pound welterweight limit Friday afternoon. After a second weigh-in, nearly two hours later, he measured at 147.2.

Still over the limit, his father and trainer, Kenny, then trimmed a few locks of Porter’s braided hair.

Porter, who had to strip down nude, finally came in at 146.8 pounds — making weight by a hair.

“This was not a step back, this was not me underestimating Ugas,” Porter insisted to the remaining media that had stuck around. “It was nothing except me not taking care of business the way it needed to be taken care of, when it needed to be taken care of.

“It’s done, it’s over, I’m solid as a rock. I feel good. And we got the fight. That’s it.”

Per California State Athletic Commission rules, Porter (29-2-1, 17 KOs) had two hours to drop the excess weight or lose his title at the scales.

Ugas (23-3, 11 KOs), who came in at 146.5 pounds, would have been eligible to fight for the title, regardless of Porter’s status.
