Veteran Brisbane captain Matt McKay will wait until the end of the A-League season to announce his future plans.

The 36-year-old former Socceroo is off contract at the end of the current campaign and, with the Roar yet to appoint a full-time coach, his future is very much up in the air.

McKay has made 19 appearances this season for the struggling Roar, including shifting to centre-back during a 2-1 win over Sydney FC amid an injury crisis.

Whether McKay would have a place under a new coach at the Roar is unclear, especially with the search for a replacement to ex-coach John Aloisi dragging into a fourth month.

“I’m pretty proud of what I’ve done throughout my career and if I go again or not, it’s not an issue yet,” McKay said.

“We’ll come to that when it is time.”

McKay earned 59 caps for the Socceroos and was part of the 2014 World Cup and 2011 and 2015 Asian Cup squads.

He is also the Roar’s record appearance holder, having played 267 times for the club and been a part of two of their three A-League championships.

The left-sided player said the ongoing saga about the Roar’s coaching position wasn’t affecting him, but he was hopeful it would be resolved soon.

Brisbane Roar captain Matt McKay will wait until the end of the A-League season to announce his future plans.

“The club were upfront straight away and said they were going to do a process … When that process finishes, I don’t know,” McKay said.

“Sooner rather than later would be great because you need to start signing players for next season and I’m sure the club’s working behind the scenes.”

Interim coach Darren Davies praised McKay’s leadership during a difficult season and could see no reason for the veteran to depart if still wanted by the Roar.

“That’s Matty’s decision at the end of the day but, the way he’s performed this year … the ball is in Matty’s court,” Davies said.

“Certainly from my point of view he’s been fantastic.”
