Mexico’s Ochoa: ‘Time to leave’ Standard Liege

USMNT’s Gregg Berhalter praises the Mexican Federation for their success in CONCACAF and says they’ve set the benchmark for MLS and U.S. Soccer.

Mexico national team goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is looking to leave Belgian club Standard Liege this summer, with Sunday’s game against Genk likely to be his last in the Belgian first division.

“There’s still a game left, but I think it will be my last,” said Ochoa after his team’s 2-0 win over Club Brugge on Thursday, in quotes published on the league’s website.

“We’ve already spoken with the club and there are things still to resolve, but I think it is the time to leave.”

Ochoa joined Standard Liege in July 2017 from Malaga and has been a regular for the club, winning the Belgian Cup in 2018. Ochoa was named the club’s player of the season this week.

“I’m sad because I like the club and I’ve given everything for it, but in a professional career you always have to evolve in the best teams or discover new things,” he added.

The former Club America goalkeeper, who starred for Mexico at the 2018 World Cup, also published an Instagram post thanking Standard’s fans.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Ochoa wants to remain in Europe, despite reported interest from MLS. And while a move to the U.S. or Liga MX will always be an option, Ochoa, who is hoping to receive a Spanish passport in the coming weeks, has focused his summer plans on finding a new team in Europe.

Ochoa has been linked with a move to FC Porto but sources say there has been no official contact as of yet.

MLS clubs Nashville SC and Chicago Fire were reportedly interested in recent weeks with Nashville having initially expressed interest in Ochoa before deciding to move on, according to ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle.

ESPN FC Spain correspondent Moises Llorens contributed to this report.
