Rafael dos Anjos and Leon Edwards both made weight Friday morning for their vital welterweight clash that is headlining the UFC San Antonio card.
Edwards, the first fighter on the scale, came in at 171 pounds, and Dos Anjos hit the exact same number. The two men will square off in an important fight for their division Saturday night (ESPN+) from the AT&T Center.
Dos Anjos (29-11) rebounded from a two-fight losing streak by defeating Kevin Lee by fourth-round submission at UFC Rochester in May. The Brazilian, who lives and trains in California, is a former UFC lightweight champion. Dos Anjos, 34, has gone 4-2 since moving up to welterweight in 2017. He is ranked No. 6 in ESPN’s MMA welterweight rankings.
Edwards (17-3) is on a seven-fight winning streak, the sixth longest active winning streak in UFC. Anyone with a longer current streak is either a champion or has held a UFC title. The Jamaica native, who lives and trains in Birmingham, England, is coming off a split decision win over Gunnar Nelson at UFC London in March. Edwards, 27, is ranked No. 10 in ESPN’s MMA welterweight rankings.
Jennifer Maia, the former Invicta FC flyweight champion, missed weight on her first attempt, coming in at 129 pounds — three over the flyweight maximum. Maia will not weigh in again and will forfeit 30 percent of her purse to her opponent, Roxanne Modafferi.
