Serena (back) retires early in Rogers Cup final

Serena Williams retired with an upper-back injury after just four games in her Rogers Cup final against Bianca Andreescu in Toronto on Sunday.

Williams, who was looking to win her first tournament since returning after the birth of her daughter, was down a break in the first set, trailing 3-1, when she could not continue.

Microphones picked up Williams referencing back spasms when she spoke to Andreescu.

Andreescu, 19, had been the first Canadian in 50 years to make the women’s final of this tournament. She won in her first tournament since the French Open in May, when a right-shoulder injury forced her to stop playing.
