Former middleweight world titlist “Kid Chocolate” Peter Quillin wasn’t without a fight for long.
He will face brawler Alfredo Angulo in a 12-round super middleweight bout that will headline a Premier Boxing Champions card on Sept. 21 (Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes, 10:30 p.m. ET) at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, California, PBC announced on Thursday night.
Quillin was originally supposed to face former super middleweight titlist Caleb Truax in a world title elimination fight on Aug. 31 — a rematch of their April 13 accidental head butt-induced, second-round no decision — but Truax suffered a torn right Achilles tendon and withdrew from the fight earlier this week.
But Quillin was quickly rescheduled to face Angulo, who is years past his best days but typically delivers action in his fights.
“Peter Quillin versus Alfredo Angulo promises to be a good, old-fashion slugfest with two fighters looking to prove they’re ready for a world title fight next,” said Tom Brown, president of TGB Promotions, which is promoting the card.
Quillin (34-1-1, 23 KOs), 36, of Brooklyn New York, has been fairly inactive in recent years. The first fight with Truax was only Quillin’s third fight since a first-round knockout loss to Daniel Jacobs in a 2015 middleweight world title bout.
“It looks like the Caleb Truax fight wasn’t meant to be, but this fight against Angulo is an important fight for me to establish myself in this division,” Quillin said. “I’m ready to go 12 rounds right now. I just have to stay ready and stay in shape because we’ve had a great camp where we were able to build on certain things. This is what was meant to be, and I’m going to make the most of it with a great performance on Sept. 21.”
Angulo (25-7, 21 KOs), 37, of Mexico, has not been a factor in the title hunt since back-to-back 10th-round knockout losses at junior middleweight to Canelo Alvarez (2014) and Erislandy Lara (2013) but has always been a fan favorite. He is coming off a second-round knockout win over Evert Bravo on April 20.
“I am looking forward to showing my fans the best Alfredo Angulo on Sept. 21,” Angulo said. “I have been working hard towards this opportunity. This is a chance to move closer to a world title and with hard work and the support of my team I’m going to win that title.”
In the co-feature, hot prospect Chris Colbert (12-0, 4 KOs), 22, of Brooklyn, will meet former junior lightweight world title challenger Miguel Beltran Jr. (33-7, 22 KOs), 30, of Mexico, in a 10-round lightweight fight.
Two 10-round welterweight fights round out the main card: Terrel Williams (18-0, 13 KOs), 35, of Los Angeles, against Puerto Rico’s Thomas Dulorme (24-3-1, 16 KOs), 29, a former world title challenger, and Jesus Ramos (10-0, 9 KOs), 18, of Casa Grande, Arizona, against Rickey Edwards (12-3, 3 KOs), 29, of Paterson, New Jersey.
There will also be coverage of preliminary action (Fox Sports 2, 8:30 p.m. ET) featuring Dominican Republic native Jeison Rosario (19-1-1, 13 KOs), 24, of Miami, against Bakhram Murtazaliev (16-0, 13 KOs), 26, a Russia native fighting out of Oxnard, California, in a junior middleweight world title elimination fight.
Former super middleweight world titlist Jose Uzcategui (28-3, 23 KOs), 28, a Venezuela native fighting out of Mexico, is also likely to land on the card against southpaw Denis Douglin (22-6, 14 KOs), 31, of Brooklyn. The fight would be Uzcategui’s first since he lost his world title by unanimous decision to Caleb Plant in January.
