The UFC’s first title fight in China is official.
UFC women’s strawweight champion Jessica Andrade and challenger Weili Zhang made weight Thursday for their title bout, which will act as the main event of UFC Shenzhen on Saturday. Andrade weighed 114.5 pounds, and Weili came in right at the limit of 115.
The fight will be the second UFC title bout this month to be held outside North America and one of four UFC title fights outside North America in the span of three months, an unprecedented occurrence.
A UFC title fight has not been held in Asia since 2012, when lightweight champion Frankie Edgar took on challenger Benson Henderson in Japan.
Andrade (20-6) won the strawweight title in her previous bout, a vicious second-round slam knockout of Rose Namajunas at UFC 237 in May. The Brazilian slugger has won four straight, the past two by violent knockout. Andrade, 27, is 7-1 since moving down to strawweight from bantamweight in 2016.
Weili (19-1) has not lost a fight since her pro MMA debut in 2013. The Chinese fighter, who is already one of the best from the country to ever fight in a major U.S. promotion, is 3-0 in the UFC. Weili, 30, is coming off a unanimous decision win over Tecia Torres at UFC 235 in March.
The co-main event welterweight fight at UFC Shenzhen is also set. China’s Li Jingliang made weight at 171 pounds, while Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos hit 170.5 on the scale.
