Du Toit named World Rugby Player of the Year

Pieter-Steph du Toit has been named World Rugby Player of the Year to cap his weekend after featuring prominently for South Africa as the Springboks defeated England in the Rugby World Cup final.

Du Toit, 27, won the award from Springboks teammate Cheslin Kolbe, Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones, New Zealand backrower Ardie Savea, England flanker Tom Curry and U.S. hooker Joe Taufete’e.

Rassie Erasmus was named as Coach of the Year, while the Springboks were named Team of the Year.

The Springboks were chosen in preference to fellow Rugby World Cup semifinalists England, Wales and New Zealand and Japan.

The Coach of the Year nominees along with Erasmus were Eddie Jones (England), Warren Gatland (Wales), Steve Hansen (New Zealand) and Jamie Joseph (Japan).

France fly-half Romain Ntamack was named Breakthrough Player of the Year, and England’s Emily Scarratt was named Women’s Player of the Year.
