SALISBURY, N.C. — Ryan Williams, a junior quarterback at Livingstone College in North Carolina, was paralyzed after a shooting in which at least six people were wounded during a party at a restaurant, police said.
Williams of Jacksonville, Florida, was among the victims shot at a Salisbury restaurant early Sunday, Salisbury police spokesman Greg Beam told news outlets. The 21-year-old Williams was taken to a Winston-Salem hospital.
Police said five other Livingstone students were wounded, including two of Williams’ teammates — Juwan Funderburk, 22, a junior linebacker, and Darryel Georn Bethune Jr., 22, a senior running back.
A statement from the school says it didn’t sponsor the party.
Three students from Catawba College, which is also in Salisbury, were also injured in the incident, police said.
Beam said there was one off-duty Salisbury police officer inside the restaurant at the time of the party, and he contacted other officers who regularly patrol the area regarding the crowd inside the building. The officers were still outside when the shooting occurred, he said.
Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting. The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.
