Daniel Ricciardo has revealed he and Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul have a bet which involves the latter getting a tattoo if they score a podium this year.
Ricciardo will leave Renault at the end of 2020, his second season with the team, for McLaren. He is yet to score a podium for the team, although he matched his best Renault result at the British Grand Prix by finishing fourth.
If he can go one better and score Renault’s first podium as a constructor team since 2011, Ricciardo has revealed he will be getting creative with a tattoo for his current boss.
“It is a bit foggy, but I do remember it was I believe he chooses placement and size, but I choose the design,” Ricciardo said on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix. “We will clear that up but it is a tattoo, and he does not have any, so it is a big deal for Cyril.
“I think it’ll be something probably spontaneous, spur of the moment, but it is going to be something funny. Like when he looks at it he shakes his head! It is like ‘aaahh, remember those times’, one of those one.”
Ricciardo has not been on the podium since the 2018 season, when driving for Red Bull.
When asked if he would be disappointed not to get a podium this year, he said: “I would be lying if I said no.
“It is more if the opportunity presents itself and we miss out on that. For sure I would be disappointed. But if I race every race my hardest and I’m finishing sixth every race because of that, then I probably am not going to be devastated. But I do want to stand back up there and be delivered a trophy on a robot or whatever they are doing now.
“I miss that, and I’ll probably get a fine for drinking out of my shoe, but it will be worth it!”
