Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the final of the Western & Southern Open due to a left hamstring injury, the tournament announced Saturday.
By walkover, Victoria Azarenka is the women’s singles champion.
“I’m sorry to have to withdraw today with an injury,” Osaka said in a statement. “I pulled my left hamstring yesterday in the second set tiebreak and it has not recovered overnight as I had hoped. This has been an emotional week and I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of support.”
Osaka made the final Friday after initially saying Wednesday that she would withdraw from her semifinal match as a statement in support of racial justice.
The tournament ultimately suspended play for Thursday, and Osaka defeated Elise Mertens 6-0, 7-6 (5) on Friday.
