Haas’ Kevin Magnussen will drive in American sports car series IMSA in 2021 for the Chip Ganassi team.
Magnussen has not been retained for another season of Formula One by Haas. The Danish driver finished on the podium at his debut race for McLaren at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix but was unable to replicate that result. After a stint with Renault he joined Haas in 2018, where he stayed for three seasons.
Haas is replacing Magnussen and Romain Grosjean with the rookie lineup of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin in 2021.
Magnussen has been exploring his options in the U.S. for a while. On Thursday, ahead of his penultimate F1 race for Haas, the Sakhir Grand Prix, he confirmed his next step. He will race with Renger van der Zande for Chip Ganassi’s team, which is returning to IMSA’s Prototype class for the season.
“If you are in professional racing anywhere in the world, you know the name Chip Ganassi and what it represents in motorsports,” Magnussen said.
“Chip has built one of the best racing organisations on and off the track, and you can look back in history and see the tremendous record of success, especially as it relates to sports car racing.”
