Lakers sign 20-year extension to Staples lease

The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t going anywhere, signing a 20-year extension to their lease at Staples Center.

The deal with building owner AEG means the team will remain through 2041.

The Lakers began play at Staples Center in November 1999 and have won six NBA titles in that span.

The team and AEG said they have plans to make a number of capital improvements to the arena.

“The decision was made first and foremost with our fans and players in mind, and AEG’s commitment to investing significant capital in the arena means that the Lakers will continue to play in one of the world’s premier venues,” said Jeanie Buss, the controlling owner of the Lakers.

Staples Center also hosts the LA Clippers, the Kings of the NHL and the Sparks of the WNBA.

Before moving into Staples Center, the Lakers played for 32 seasons at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
