A shortage of available players was one possible reason for West Indies replacing a batter with a legspinner

Toss Pakistan opt to bat v West Indies

Pakistan captain Babar Azam chose to bat in the second T20I against West Indies, with the hosts looking to seal the series after winning the opener convincingly on Monday.
While Pakistan were unchanged, West Indies were forced to make one change with their No. 4 Devon Thomas out injured. Legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr took his place.

After West Indies failed to chase after winning the toss on Monday, their captain Nicholas Pooran said he would have liked to bat first, and hoped his players could execute their plans better with the ball in a must-win game.

West Indies’ choice of replacing a batter with a spin bowler could be due to the lack of available squad members. Before the series began, batting allrounders Roston Chase, Kyle Mayers and fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell were ruled out after testing positive for Covid-19 upon arrival in Pakistan.

Among the batters, Darren Bravo was also ruled out with what a CWI release termed “a non COVID related illness”.
