A King’s welcome: Students excited to see LeBron James during surprise I Promise School visit

LeBron James has been busy off the court since the Los Angeles Lakers failed to make the postseason this year. He enjoyed a vacation to the Maldives with his family in April, engaged in a Twitter Q&A with his followers a few weeks ago and saw his son Bronny off to prom.

On Wednesday, James stopped by his I Promise School in Akron, Ohio, to spend time with the students before the year ended for summer vacation.

“Appreciate y’all letting me crash your last day of school!! Love you all and have a fun and safe Summer. Don’t forget what we talked about,” James said in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

Given all of the excited faces he was met with upon arrival, it seems the visit was a surprise to the students. James shared hugs and took pictures with the students, as well as the staff. The 37-year-old appeared to enjoy the reactions to his arrival, retweeting a video of the kids welcoming him with laughing emojis.

James opened the I Promise School in 2018. The school is specifically focused on outreach to at-risk youth in his hometown. James also arranged for students who complete the school’s program to have free tuition at the University of Akron. Other initiatives at the I Promise School include a program for parents of students who haven’t completed their high school education and another created to help high-school-age students prepare for college.

By 2029, James hopes for 1,200 students to have moved through the program and transitioned into college.
