Divisional rankings: Gabriela Fundora wins; still out of top 5 at flyweights

Boxing

Rising prospect Gabriela Fundora (9-0, 4 KO) beat Naomi Arellano Reyes (9-2, 5 KO) in a flyweight contest last Saturday, but felt short of being ranked in ESPN’s divisional rankings. The 20-year-old Fundora, one of ESPN’s 25-under-25 fighters, is inching her way toward a title shot and potentially a Top 5 spot in her division if she continues to domninate opponents as she did against Arellano Reyes.

At junior featherweight, Nina Meinke (14-3, 3 KO) beat Karina Szmalenberg (14-54-4) by unanimous decision in Germany in a stay-busy fight.

On Oct. 3, another 25-under-25 fighter, 22-year-old junior featherweight Phannarai Netisri (12-0, 5 KO) beat Ana Arrazola (28-15-3, 14 KO). The junior featherweight division has a lot of young talent between Netisri, 24-year-old British fighters Ellie Scotney and Katie Healy, 29-year-old Segolene Lefebvre, the 27-year-old Johnson and the 24-year-old Mercado.

This weekend brings another slate of excellent women’s matchups. This card was supposed to take place a month ago, but it was postponed due to the death of one of the most recognizable public figures of the last century — Queen Elizabeth II.

That event on Sept. 8 forced the postponement of one of the most intriguing boxing cards of the year — an all-female show headlined by the undisputed middleweight championship between WBC, IBF and WBA champion Claressa Shields and WBO champ Savannah Marshall.

The renewed date is Saturday (ESPN+, 2:30 p.m. ET) and has as the co-feature the junior lightweight unification title bout between Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner.

The card, on one of the most intriguing boxing weekends of 2022, will take place at London’s O2 Arena — afternoon in the United States — the perfect first act for a day including the undisputed men’s lightweight championship between Devin Haney and George Kambosos Jr. in Australia (ESPN, 10:30 p.m. ET) and the return of Deontay Wilder later that night (Fox PPV, 9 p.m. ET).

The rest of the card in London features intriguing prospects, including lightweight Caroline Dubois, junior bantamweight Ginny Fuchs, welterweight Lauren Price, featherweight Ebonie Jones and junior featherweight Sarah Liegmann, among others.

On the undercard of Haney-Kambosos Jr. is the IBF junior featherweight title fight between titleholder Cherneka Johnson (14-1, 6 KO) and former WBC bantamweight champion Susie Ramadan (29-3, 12 KO), whose three losses have all come in title fights.

It’s a busy night for the division, as in Chihuahua, Mexico, WBC junior featherweight champion Yamileth Mercado (19-3, 5 KO) makes the fourth defense of her title in an intriguing fight against Mariana Juarez (55-11-4, 19 KO), the former WBC bantamweight and flyweight champion. The 42-year-old Juarez has lost two of her last three fights — to Jackie Nava last October and Yuliahn Luna Avila in 2020. In between, she beat Alejandra Soto Martinez in May, 2021.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Skye Nicolson (4-0) takes on Krystina Jacobs (6-3) in a featherweight bout in Australia (DAZN, 4 a.m. ET). Jacobs has lost two of her last three fights. This fight is on the undercard of the Liam Paro-Brock Jarvis card in South Brisbane, Australia.

In Rosemont, Illinois, middleweight Olivia Curry (5-1, 2 KO) faces Samantha Pill (5-1, 1 KO) in a fight that, if Curry wins, could help push her forward in a division without much depth.

On Friday, undefeated Oshin Derieuw (16-0, 6 KO) — ESPN’s No. 5 junior welterweight — takes on Mahjouba Oubtil (4-2, 1 KO) in Ghent, Belgium in an eight-round fight. It is Derieuw’s third fight of 2022.

On Thursday, veteran Heather Hardy (22-2, 4 KO) returns to the ring for the first time since May 2021, trying to rebound from the first two losses of her career when she faces Calista Silgado (20-15-3, 15 KO) at Sony Hall in New York. Silgado has lost four of her last five fights. Hardy’s two losses came to Amanda Serrano in 2019 and Jessica Camara last year — both fighters ranked in the Top 5 in their divisions. Hardy’s last victory was in 2018, when she won the vacant WBO featherweight title that she then lost to Serrano.

Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
