Women’s boxing pound-for-pound rankings: A new No. 1 and the debut of Alycia Baumgardner in the top 10

Boxing

Claressa Shields is back on top in the ESPN women’s pound-for-pound rankings after a dominant victory over Savannah Marshall. With the victory, Shields (13-0, 2 KOs), became the undisputed middleweight champion for the second time. She is the first fighter, male or female, to be undisputed in the same division twice. She’s also a former undisputed junior middleweight champion.

“The line between Shields and Katie Taylor is so incredibly close and it’s a shame the difference in weight classes means the two would never be able to fight,” ESPN boxing writer Michael Rothstein said. “I moved Shields above Taylor because what I had been waiting for from Shields is this type of high-level fight.

“That’s not her fault, it’s the reality of the divisions she is fighting in. But how she fought, and how she beat, another top 10 fighter in Marshall just showed how good Shields really is.”

While Shields has been in this spot before, a new woman is joining the rankings for the first time. Alycia Baumgardner is making her debut after defeating Mikaela Mayer on Saturday. Baumgardner (13-1, 7 KOs) added the WBO and IBF women’s junior lightweight titles to her WBC with an impressive split-decision win over Mayer. The victory puts her at No. 5, dropping Mayer one spot to No. 6.

Here’s the current top 10.
