The 2023 NBA All-Star Game is set to take place Feb. 19 at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City. This season’s game marks the 30th anniversary of the first NBA All-Star Game hosted by the Utah Jazz in 1993.

NBA All-Star Weekend will tip off Friday, Feb. 17, with the celebrity game and Rising Stars Challenge. NBA All-Star Saturday will feature the skills challenge, 3-point contest and slam dunk contest. This year will also feature the NBA HBCU Classic with a game between Grambling State and Southern on Feb. 18.

NBA All-Star starters were announced Jan. 26 on TNT, the reserves will be announced on Feb. 2. This will be the sixth consecutive season in which the All-Star Game uses a “draft” format, in which each conference’s top vote-getter will serve as captain and draft a roster from the remaining 22 players.

This will be the first year, however, in which said draft will be just moments before the start of the game as a live segment on TNT.

This year’s All-Star Game will be the fourth to use the target score — the score of the leading team after the third quarter, plus 24 points — and the fourth quarter will be played without a game clock.

2023 NBA All-Star rosters

The All-Star starters have been revealed, and Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James will be team captains.

Boston Celtics interim head coach Joe Mazzulla and his staff will coach Team Giannis in the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. Denver currently leads the Western Conference and the Nuggets will only need to win one of their remaining three games this week to clinch the honor for Nuggets coach Michael Malone, who would also be a first-time All-Star coach if he earns the honor, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps reports.

Fans account for 50% of the votes, while NBA players and a media panel account for 25% each. TNT will announce the reserves, as selected by NBA head coaches, on Thursday, Feb. 2.

James and Antetokounmpo will select their teams in a draft held immediately before the All-Star Game. This year, TNT will air the All-Star draft as a new, live pregame segment on Sunday, Feb. 19.

James has been a captain in each of the five seasons the NBA has used this format. He has drafted against Curry, Antetokounmpo (twice) and Durant (twice). Team LeBron has won the past five All-Star Games.

2023 Rising Stars Challenge Roster

The Rising Stars Challenge (9 p.m. ET Feb. 17, TNT) will feature a mini-tournament with four teams and three games. There are 21 NBA players to be drafted onto three teams, the seven G League players will comprise fourth team. Honorary coaches are Pau Gasol, Joakim Noah, Jason Terry and Deron Williams. Gasol, Noah and Williams will draft their teams at a later date while Terry will coach the G League squad. Each game will be played to a Final Target Score: two semifinal matchups to 40, and a championship game to 25.

In selecting the NBA players for Jordan Rising Stars, each NBA team submitted one ballot per coaching staff. Each coaching staff selected four frontcourt players, four guards and two additional players at either position, in order of preference, for the rookie ballot and the sophomore ballot. Coaches were not permitted to vote for any player on their team. The NBA participants for Jordan Rising Stars were determined by the total points each player received from the ballots. Points were awarded based on where a player was ranked on each ballot. The player pool includes an additional rookie based on the ballot results.

After a combination of fans, media and the players themselves chose the five starters from each conference, the fate of the reserves (two guards, three frontcourt players and two wild cards) fell solely in the hands of the coaches, whose ballots were due Monday.

Fair or unfair, those same coaches now control millions of dollars (and to be fair, the fans, media and players played a role by voting in the starters).

There are seven players who are eligible to receive a bonus if they are selected as a reserve to the All-Star Game, five of whom have a legitimate chance of being selected to one of the final spots (sorry, Buddy Hield and Collin Sexton).
