HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Brett Moffitt won his sixth race of the season as he captured the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship Friday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Now he must find a ride for next year.
Moffitt led 59 of the 137 laps to win his first truck title and the first championship for Hattori Racing Enterprises. He led the final 29 laps on the way to victory, easily outdistancing non-championship-contender Grant Enfinger by two seconds and his next-closest championship contender Noah Gragson, who finished third, more than five seconds behind Moffitt.
The Moffitt team, owned by former IndyCar race Shigeaki Hattori, has pieced together sponsorship all season, but Hattori has not been able to commit to Moffitt for 2019 because of a lack of sponsorship.
Moffitt’s title victory should help anyone thinking about sponsoring him. He won the final two races of the season.
Moffitt, 26, was the 2015 NASCAR Cup Series rookie of the year as he drove primarily for Front Row Motorsports. He didn’t have a full-time ride since 2015 until this year.
Gragson, who will leave Kyle Busch Motorsports for JR Motorsports to replace Elliott Sadler next year, was the only threat to Moffitt for the championship all race. GMS Racing teammates Justin Haley (eighth) and 2016 truck champion Johnny Sauter (12th) were non-factors all night.
