Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron has told ESPN FC it is the Premier League’s “competitiveness” which attracts him ahead of La Liga.

While many South American players gravitate toward Spain, but the Paraguay international, 24, has never hidden his desire to play in the English top flight and is a reported target for Newcastle.

“Yes, I really like the English style of football for the dynamic play and the competitiveness these is,” Almiron said when asked why he preferred the Premier League to Europe’s other top leagues. “I think all of the teams are very good and they’re all fighting.”

“I think that aspect helps you as a footballer.”

One of the main reasons many South American players often opt for La Liga ahead of the Premier League is because the Spanish top flight generally suits more technical players while the demands in England are more of a physical nature. However, Almiron is confident he would be able to adapt.

“Yes. I’m sure that if the time comes whether I will do poorly or well, but I’m really confident in the work I do,” he said when asked if he thought the Premier League suited him.

“If it’s the right time to go, I will try to do things in the best way to ensure it goes well.”

Atlanta face Portland on Sunday Dec. 9 in the MLS Cup final.
