Brewers call up prospect Hiura, put Shaw on IL

The Milwaukee Brewers have promoted second baseman Keston Hiura, their top overall prospect, from the minors.

The Brewers selected Hiura’s contract from Triple-A San Antonio on Tuesday and placed third baseman Travis Shaw on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist strain.

Hiura, 22, was off to an outstanding start this season at San Antonio, batting .333 with 11 home runs and 26 RBIs in 37 games.

Hiura was the ninth overall selection in the 2017 draft and was rated this season as baseball’s No. 21 overall prospect by ESPN’s Keith Law.

It is unclear whether Hiura will make his debut in Milwaukee’s starting lineup Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The promotion of Hiura and the injury to Shaw likely means that Mike Moustakas will shift from second base to third base while Hiura will play second.

Shaw was off to a slow start this season, batting just .163 with four homers, eight RBIs and 50 strikeouts in 135 at-bats.

The Brewers have not announced how long Shaw will be sidelined with the wrist injury. Milwaukee also designated infielder Cory Spangenburg for assignment in a corresponding roster move.
