England omit Cipriani from World Cup training squad

Gloucester fly-half Danny Cipriani has been left out of head coach Eddie Jones’ third World Cup training camp in Treviso, Italy.

Cipriani was included in the previous training squad selection but spent time away from the team to do specialised strength and conditioning work.

Jones has picked a 38-man squad ahead of the 12-day training camp, including uncapped Harlequins centre Joe Marchant, who will join the group for the first time.

“Treviso is a hard yards camp with conditions similar to Tokyo,” Jones said in a statement. “Team training will be about being adaptable and off the field enjoying each other’s company.”

“Selection is absolutely challenging, we have left some good players doing work at their clubs and they must be ready if called up.”

The warm weather training camp is aiming to help acclimatise the players to conditions expected during the tournament in Japan in October.

The deadline for Jones to select his final 31-man squad for the tournament is Sept 2.

England’s next games will be against Wales and Ireland at Twickenham in August, and Italy in Newcastle on Sept 6, as part of the Quilter Internationals ahead of the start of the Rugby World Cup in Japan against Tonga on Sept 22.
