EDMONTON, Alberta — There were no weight troubles for Max Holloway on Friday morning.
The UFC featherweight champion weighed in at 145 pounds even for his UFC 240 title defense here. Frankie Edgar, his opponent, hit 145 as well, making the headlining bout official. The two will fight Saturday night at Rogers Place.
Holloway has had issues with weight and making it to the scale in the past. In April 2018, he was pulled by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) during his weight cut before a potential 155-pound title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223. NYSAC cited a potential health risk. Last July, Holloway fell ill with concussion-like symptoms and withdrew from a scheduled featherweight title defense against Brian Ortega at UFC 226 three days prior to the bout.
Holloway (20-4) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Dustin Poirier in an interim lightweight title fight at UFC 236 in April. That loss snapped a 13-fight winning streak for the Hawaii native. Holloway, 27, won the interim featherweight title in 2016 and has held 145-pound gold since. He has two successful title defenses.
Edgar (23-6-1), the former UFC lightweight champion, has won three of his last four fights. The New Jersey native beat Cub Swanson by unanimous decision at UFC Atlantic City in April 2018 in his last bout. Edgar, 37, is a longtime contender at both lightweight and featherweight — and likely UFC Hall of Famer when he calls it a career. He and Holloway were scheduled to fight twice prior, but those bouts fell through due to injuries.
On Friday morning, Cris “Cyborg” Justino (146 pounds) and Felicia Spencer (145) both hit their mark on the scale to make the UFC 240 co-main event official.
