Former welterweight world champion Carlos Baldomir was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday in his native Argentina after being found guilty of sexually abusing one of his daughters for a two-year period when she was between 7 and 9.
Baldomir, 48, was initially arrested in 2016 and spent three years in prison awaiting his trial, which ended last week.
Baldomir denied the charges and when he arrived at court for the beginning of his trial he gave the middle finger to reporters covering it. According to media reports in Argentina, Baldomir’s ex-wife, who is the mother of the child, reported Baldomir to police when she discovered what had happened.
Prosecutors were seeking a 20-year prison sentence for Baldomir.
Baldomir (49-16-6, 15 KOs) boxed from 1993 to 2014 and was best known for his massive upset decision win over Zab Judah to win the welterweight world title in January 2006 in New York.
He held the title for 10 months, defending it against Arturo Gatti by ninth-round knockout and then losing it by one-sided decision to Floyd Mayweather later that year.
Baldomir would later lose a decision to Vernon Forrest for a vacant junior middleweight world title in 2007 and by sixth-round knockout to Canelo Alvarez in 2010 in Alvarez’s first notable victory.
The fight with Alvarez was Baldomir’s last in the United States. He fought his final seven fights over the next four years in Argentina and Mexico, going 4-3.
