‘Dynamite’ Dubois blows out Tetteh in first round

Boxing

Daniel “Dynamite” Dubois put forth another display of explosive punching power and sound technique as he blew out Ebenezer Tetteh in less than one round at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Friday night.

Coming out of the gate with great purpose, Dubois (13-0, 12 KOs) started quickly by establishing his hard left jab, which soon set up his power punches, including a steady dose of right crosses and left hooks that were thrown in combinations to both the body and head.

The overmatched Tetteh (19-1, 16 KOs), who came into this bout undefeated but also sorely untested, was simply overwhelmed by this early barrage and soon hit the canvas.

While he was able to gather himself and take the mandatory eight count from referee Mark Lyson, it was just a momentary respite, as another barrage of punches came his way. And as he hit the canvas for the second time, Lyson made the decision to wave off the fight at 2:10 of round one.

Tetteh wasn’t nearly as formidable as his built-up record suggested, but the manner in which Dubois dispatched him was still impressive. The 22-year-old Dubois, a highly decorated amateur and already the British heavyweight champion, is serving notice that he will soon be force to be reckoned with on the world-class scene.

Adams retains belt after Salinas draw

It certainly wasn’t her strongest outing, but WBO womens flyweight champion, Nicola Adams (5-0-1, 3 KOs) was able to retain her title as her bout with Maria Salinas was ruled a draw after 10 rounds. The scores read 97-93 Adams, 96-94 Salinas and 95-95.

For much of this fight, Adams was sluggish and was steadily pressured by the challenger from Mexico, who spent much of the night coming forward from her southpaw stance. There really wasn’t any sustained action between the two and many of the rounds were close.

While Salinas pressed ahead, Adams mostly boxed from the outside, circling the perimeter of the ring and throwing counter-punches at the oncoming Salinas. At no point throughout the fight did anyone truly dominate the action or take control. There wasn’t much separating the two in terms of effectiveness.

It turned out, not much at all.
