Bellator MMA announced Tuesday it has postponed a live event scheduled for June 6 in Chicago due to the ongoing effects of the coronavirus.

The event, Bellator 244, was supposed to feature a rematch between former lightweight champion Michael Chandler and Benson Henderson and take place at Wintrust Arena.

“Due to the ongoing safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, as well as current federal, state and local government mandates, Bellator MMA officials today have announced that Bellator 244, originally scheduled to take place on June 6 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill., has been postponed,” the promotion stated.

“The organization will continue to monitor the situation closely and fully intends to reschedule the event as soon as possible. As always, the health and safety of our athletes, fans, partners and staff remains our top priority. We appreciate the understanding and patience of everyone involved during this incredibly difficult time.”

This marks the fifth consecutive event Bellator has been forced to postpone in the wake of the coronavirus. Earlier this week, the Professional Fighters League, a season-format MMA promotion, announced it had postponed its entire 2020 season due to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic. The UFC has remained adamant it will promote an event on May 9.
