Lewis Hamilton is on course to match Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 F1 victories at Ferrari’s 1000th grand prix, hosted at the Mugello circuit owned by the Italian team.
Mugello is hosting its first ever F1 race, the Grand Prix of Tuscany, on Sep. 13. The race is being held to commemorate Ferrari’s milestone but Hamilton’s current form suggests it might be historic for another reason.
Hamilton has won six of the eight races this year and holds a comfortable 48 point lead over Max Verstappen. His Belgian Grand Prix was his 89th — he can claim a 90th at Monza’s Italian Grand Prix on Sep.6. If he does so, he will look to move level with Schumacher at Ferrari’s circuit seven days later.
Schumacher’s name is synonymous with Ferrari, as he recorded 72 of his wins and five of his seven world championships with the Italian team. He won five straight championships at the beginning of the 2000s.
Assuming he wins the next two races, he will then look for a record-breaking 92nd at the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi.
Hamilton also looks set to match Schumacher’s record of seven titles at some point this season.
