Team principal Simon Roberts to leave Williams

Simon Roberts will stand down as Williams team principal following an internal restructure that will result in CEO Jost Capito taking over the role.

A team statement on Tuesday said the move is part of streamlining exercise aimed at moving Williams back to the front of the grid.

Roberts joined the team from McLaren in June, 2020 as managing director and became acting team principal in September when former deputy team principal, Claire Williams, and the Williams family sold the team to Dorilton Capital.

He was promoted to team principal in December last year when Capito joined as CEO.

The restructure will also see Francois-Xavier Demaison, who joined as technical director from Volkswagen earlier this year, take accountability for trackside and engineering.

“Simon has played an integral role in managing the transition over the last 12 months and I would like to thank him for his great contribution during that time,” Capito said.

Roberts added: “It has been a pleasure to take on the role of team principal following the departure of the Williams family from the sport.

“However, with the transition well underway I am looking forward to a new challenge and wish everyone in the team well for the future.”
