An MRI on New York Mets right-hander Marcus Stroman‘s left hip showed “no significant issues,” a team spokesman said Wednesday, according to MLB.com.
He is considered day-to-day.
Mets manager Luis Rojas said Wednesday that Stroman is optimistic he can make his next start but wouldn’t go that far, himself.
“This guy, he’s a warrior. He’s got a big heart. He thinks he can do everything, even when he’s limited. But I think right now the smart thing is to get treated today and get some soreness out,” Rojas said. “The day off tomorrow helps for his next time to pitch and that’s probably why he’s optimistic, but right now we want to work with him and get him the treatment that he needs to get that out of the way.”
The Mets also have right fielder Michael Conforto back in the lineup, batting third, Wednesday after he was reinstated from the injured list. His return was delayed Tuesday after Triple-A Syracuse postponed its game to allow for COVID-19 testing and contact tracing within the organization. Conforto tested negative, but the Mets decided not to reinstate him Tuesday “out of an abundance of caution.” He had been sidelined since May 16 because of a hamstring injury.
Stroman (6-5, 2.32 ERA) had seemed to indicate he had received good news Wednesday, tweeting, “Everything’s gonna be okay” earlier in the day.
Stroman left his start on Tuesday night against the Atlanta Braves in the second inning because of soreness in the hip. It was just the latest injury for the Mets, who lost fifth starter Joey Lucchesi to a season-ending torn left elbow ligament this week.
Lucchesi’s injury leaves just David Peterson behind Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker and Stroman. With Carlos Carrasco (right hamstring) and Noah Syndergaard (elbow) still several weeks from returning, acting general manager Zack Scott said Tuesday he would “explore all options” for rotation reinforcements.
The Mets recalled right-hander Tylor Megill from Syracuse to start in Wednesday night’s game against the Braves.
In addition, the Mets recalled right-hander Corey Oswalt from Syracuse while placing catcher Tomas Nido (wrist) on the 10-day IL and optioning relievers Yennsy Diaz and Sean Reid-Foley to Syracuse.
Lucchesi and right-handler Robert Gsellman (lat) were transferred to the 60-day IL to accommodate Megill and Oswalt on the 40-man roster.
