Chantelle Cameron became the undisputed junior welterweight champion Saturday, defending two belts and picking up two others when she beat Jessica McCaskill — giving the undisputed welterweight champion her first loss since 2017.
Cameron (17-0, 8 KO) looked impressive in victory, and solidified her place at the top of the junior welterweight division.
The victory also might offer bigger opportunities for the 31-year-old — perhaps a 2023 fight against undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor.
As for McCaskill, she remains No. 1 at welterweight and we inserted her, for now, as No. 2 at junior welterweight. If she chooses to continue to fight there, she’s still ahead of the rest of that division, especially with Kali Reis, who is now No. 3 in the division, on a break shooting the series ‘True Detective.’
Rising prospect Taylah Robertson (7-1, 2 KO), had a good night beating Chaoz Minowa (7-4, 6 KO) by unanimous decision in junior bantamweight bout last weekend. The 24-year-old Robertson is going to be someone to pay attention to.
Also last weekend, Nina Meinke (15-3, 3 KO), who was once ranked in ESPN’s top 5 at featherweight, won her third straight fight, beating Edith Soledad Matthysse (17-13-1, 1 KO) by unanimous decision.
This weekend, another unification fight takes place as Natasha Jonas (12-2-1, 8 KO) and Marie-Eve Dicaire (18-1, 1 KO) fight for the WBC, WBO and IBF junior middleweight titles. Jonas, ESPN’s No. 2 junior middleweight, has been picking up titles throughout 2022, beating Chris Namus for the WBO belt in February and then Patricia Berghult for her WBC title in September.
If she beats Dicaire, ESPN’s No. 1 junior middleweight, two options could be obvious: An undisputed fight against WBA champion Terri Harper or perhaps a fight against undisputed middleweight champion (and former undisputed junior middleweight champion) Claressa Shields.
Shields gave Dicaire her only loss back in 2021 to win all four major junior middleweight belts. If Dicaire wins, fighting Harper for the undisputed title would be the obvious fight to make.
In another title fight, ESPN’s top-ranked strawweight and junior flyweight, Seniesa Estrada (22-0, 9 KO), returns to the ring for the first time in 2022 — and the first time with her new promoter, Top Rank — when she fights on the co-feature against Jazmin Gala Villarino (6-1-2, 1 KO) at the Palms in Las Vegas defending her WBA strawweight title (ESPN+, 7:15 p.m. ET).
It’s been almost a year since Estrada has been in the ring, but an impressive performance on Saturday could move her into the top 5 pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They’ll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
